Los Alamitos was populated by missionaries in the 19th century, and quickly grew from a collection of pueblos and presideos into a bustling town. By 1920, Los Alamitos Boulevard had become the first street paved with asphalt in the area, and in 1960 Los Alamitos became a chartered city. The area is now home to scores of residential developments featuring a wide range of housing styles. Local neighborhoods include Suburbia, located towards the city's south end, Greenbrook, and El Dorado Estates in the northern section, and Dutch Haven to the east, near the famous Los Alamitos Race Track. Los Alamitos real estate also surrounds the well-known unincorporated community of Rossmoor.

Los Alamitos' distinguished school district has produced several award-winning schools, including Weaver Elementary, which has ranked number one in test scores for all of Southern California, and Los Alamitos High School, recognized three times as a Distinguished School, and designated three times as a National Blue Ribbon school.
